Control Of Bed Bugs

Those annoying little creatures that tend to hide out in the bed covers have made a new comeback. Infestation by bed bugs is on the rise in some places, and everyone is scrambling to find a way to get rid of them. Since they are nocturnal in nature, one only sees them come out at night, so the process of elimination requires finding them in their hiding places.

Where do bed bugs hide? They hide in dark secluded areas, usually in or around the area of beds such as in the corners or mattresses, underneath covers, and other places within close proximity to the bed. They tend to come out at night to feed, and often do so while the host is sleeping and unaware of their presence. In fact, often times the only clue the host has that bed bugs are a problem is when awakening and discovering a red, swollen spot where the bug has bitten him.

Getting rid of the insects requires using mechanical means such as a vacuum cleaner, and you must make sure to clean all areas thoroughly where the bugs and their nymphs may be hiding. That means taking care to vacuum under all furniture and move the bed so that you are able to vacuum underneath and in any surrounding areas. You also need to look for signs of bug excrement in order to know other places they may frequent and hide until they return at night.

Although they can usually be controlled with use of a household insecticide that is designated for use on bed bugs, severe cases of infestation may require the services of a professional exterminator. Make certain if you do it yourself to pull the bed away from the wall and treat any areas surrounding the bed so that the bugs don’t return – petroleum jelly is good for this purpose.
