It may sound like an easy thing to do when you make the decision to move your toddler from the crib into a child bed, but it is actually a very traumatic experience for your baby. His crib is a special part of him, and he feels comfort in there among the smell of everything that screams baby, and the small size that fits him well by the time he is about a year or so old.

Do not be surprised is your baby is not receptive to sleeping in a new bed. For the little one, anything that is unfamiliar is difficult for him to accept. It will take your baby time to accept this new bed, mostly because he needs to develop a sense of comfort and know that it is his. As everyone probably knows, babies are not always very receptive to sharing what is theirs, especially things as personal as a bed and some special toys, so before he will feel comfortable in a new bed, he has to be sure it s his and his alone.

The easiest way to transition your baby to a new bed is to choose something that you know he likes. Take him with you and let him see what is on display and choose his own bed. No matter how young your child is, any toddler over the age of one knows what he likes in a picture and will be drawn to that. It may be Spiderman for boys or Care Bears for the girls, but they will be attracted to something. Follow your child s lead as long as it is practical and financially possible. Do not insist on Mickey Mouse because that is what you liked as a child if your child is leading you in another direction. Be open and understanding to your child s needs as you move him from the comfort of his crib into the more open space of a toddler bed.

Those annoying little creatures that tend to hide out in the bed covers have made a new comeback. (...)

Those annoying little creatures that tend to hide out in the bed covers have made a new comeback. Infestation by bed bugs is on the rise in some places, and everyone is scrambling to find a way to get rid of them. Since they are nocturnal in nature, one only sees them come out at night, so the process of elimination requires finding them in their hiding places.

Where do bed bugs hide? They hide in dark secluded areas, usually in or around the area of beds such as in the corners or mattresses, underneath covers, and other places within close proximity to the bed. They tend to come out at night to feed, and often do so while the host is sleeping and unaware of their presence. In fact, often times the only clue the host has that bed bugs are a problem is when awakening and discovering a red, swollen spot where the bug has bitten him.

Getting rid of the insects requires using mechanical means such as a vacuum cleaner, and you must make sure to clean all areas thoroughly where the bugs and their nymphs may be hiding. That means taking care to vacuum under all furniture and move the bed so that you are able to vacuum underneath and in any surrounding areas. You also need to look for signs of bug excrement in order to know other places they may frequent and hide until they return at night.

Although they can usually be controlled with use of a household insecticide that is designated for use on bed bugs, severe cases of infestation may require the services of a professional exterminator. Make certain if you do it yourself to pull the bed away from the wall and treat any areas surrounding the bed so that the bugs don’t return – petroleum jelly is good for this purpose.

For those who have frequent overnight guests but do not have the luxury of a guest room, sleeping arrangements can be difficult, especially if more than one person is staying, and you have only a sofa with room for one person to sleep. (...)

For those who have frequent overnight guests but do not have the luxury of a guest room, sleeping arrangements can be difficult, especially if more than one person is staying, and you have only a sofa with room for one person to sleep. For those situations, sofa beds are the perfect answer.

Although they are more difficult to find that in days gone by, it’s still possible to find a nice sofa bed, and they are certainly easier to manipulate than the first ones that require the sofa to be opened by clicking on the back of it to open it. Not difficult in most situations, but it required pulling the sofa forward during the time it was open since you were actually taking the back of the sofa and laying it flat. Most modern sofa beds are easier, although it is necessary to move a cocktail table from in front of the sofa to pull it out for sleeping. In addition, the new sofa beds usually have a Queen Size sleep area compared to full size on the older sofas.

Sofa beds can also be a practical answer for temporary sleeping arrangements for someone who is confined to bed such as perhaps a spouse who had surgery and can’t climb stairs or a parent who is visiting and unable to get around well enough to walk up and down stairs. They may even do the job for a single person who has only an efficiency apartment and doesn’t want to reduce an already small space by including a bed in the room.

Whatever the purpose you have for buying a sofa bed, it’s a very versatile and practical piece of furniture that will serve you well. It also tends to have storage space underneath for the bedding so that you don’t have to pull things out of the linen closet when you need to use it. Other than the futon, there is not likely to be another piece of furniture so practical and space saving.

If you’ve decided that you make to change to a platform bed, you want to make sure that you understand the difference. (...)

If you’ve decided that you make to change to a platform bed, you want to make sure that you understand the difference. Unlike a traditional bed, a platform does not require the use of a box spring, and as such requires a different type of mattress that the variety that adorns ordinary beds. One might think that the lack of a box spring means the beds are uncomfortable, but such is not the case.

Changing to a different style of bed than that to which you have become accustomed can take some adjusting. The first thought that probably comes to mind is that without a box spring, the mattress cannot be comfortable, and if you take a negative attitude, you will not find the comfort that is in the bed or that you seek. For strength and durability, these beds are far superior to the standard bed frame/box spring/mattress convention that has been a part of our heritage for so many years. Instead of a standard frame, the platform bed relies on a platform, thus the name platform bed.

The bed has many different styles and speaks of elegance from every angle. Whether leather, wood, or iron, both beauty and durability shine through from every position. If you’ve never slept on a platform bed, take some time to try one out and see how comfortable and well fitting it is. Do keep in mind, though, that you must turn the mattress over regularly and beat in order to keep dust and other contagions from irritating the lungs and nostrils. If you take care of your bed, you can be certain that it will give you many years of pleasure and comfort. You’ll find it much more comfortable and easier to care for than that old box spring and mattress that has served you all your life.

One of the most expensive tasks involved in preparing for the new arrival is shopping for baby furniture. (...)

One of the most expensive tasks involved in preparing for the new arrival is shopping for baby furniture. With so many different varieties from which to choose, it’s a major decision to choose a crib. Add that to the task of choosing all of the nice things that you want your new little one to have, and you can spend days simply making selections.

On the other hand, don’t you get a smile on your face as you look at all of the baby furniture and get visual ideas of how it will look in the room you have selected as the nursery? Doesn’t browsing just make you feel giddy inside when you think of the day you will be using the furniture you buy for your baby? Use some caution, though, and don’t make the mistake many new parents make and buy more furniture than you need for your baby. It is not necessary to fill the nursery with furniture; there will be plenty of time for additional furniture when your baby becomes a toddler and has the need for more space for clothing and toys. Many first time parents spend more money than is necessary to furnish the nursery, and often times it cuts into the budget for other items that are of greater importance.

Instead of trying to buy all of the things that you think your baby will need from birth until he starts kindergarten, concentrate on things that he will need for your child’s first year such as a crib, dressing table, bassinette (optional), and dresser for clothing. Even when you set up your baby gift registry, do not include things that your child will not need for several years. Not only will it be something you will need to store, but with the way baby items change, it may be obsolete by the time you need it.

It seems that it should be an easy decision to make – buying bunk beds for your child or children as the case may be. (...)

It seems that it should be an easy decision to make – buying bunk beds for your child or children as the case may be. Unfortunately, that is not the case because there are several different factors that you must consider, not the least of which is the safety of your children. It’s important for the new parent to understand that children are not dainty little creatures who will always take care of their furniture. After all, how many times have you caught them jumping on the sofa in the living room? If you are like most parents, it’s a daily battle to teach them that the sofa or Mommy’s and Daddy’s bed do not double as a trampoline.

For a young child, bunk beds must be sturdy; and this means first and foremost to forego the idea of a one piece mattress known as a “Bunkie.” If your child jumps on it too many times, the bottom framework will split, and you will find yourself having to replace the entire mattress. Most parents who have bunk beds for their children agree that the concept of a wooden platform underneath a regular firm mattress is the best. Not only is it more comfortable, it is much sturdier than the one piece “Bunkie” style mattress.

The second thing to consider when buying bunk beds is whether to buy wooden or metal/iron. Some people think wood is better because of the potential for a child to hurt himself on metal or iron, but in truth, there is less likelihood of a child becoming injured on an iron or metal frame bank bed. A wooden frame, for one, has sharp edges in comparison to the rounded edges of the metal or iron frame. When you add that to the potential for the child getting splinters from the wooden bed, the answer is clearly that wooden bunk beds are more dangerous for a child than metal or iron bunk beds. Look at it from both sides before you make your decision, and be sure to choose bunks beds that are sturdy and of high quality.

It’s important when choosing a foam mattress to make certain that you choose the one that is right for you. (...)

It’s important when choosing a foam mattress to make certain that you choose the one that is right for you. This means not choosing by price or brand, but by the firmness and its contour. If you want to have a restful sleep without back problems, you have to make sure that your mattress correctly forms to your body’s shape.

Unlike feather mattresses, a foam mattress molds to the shape of your body, which is why they are not only more comfortable but better suited to those who have trouble sleeping because of back or leg problems. By choosing the correct foam mattress for your shape, you can be assured a better night’s sleep and perhaps even ridding yourself of some of the pain and stiffness that has been preventing you from getting a good night’s sleep. Sometimes when we have trouble sleeping, we don’t think about a worn out mattress being the cause, but the truth is that if your mattress is worn, it causes you to toss and turn, trying to get comfortable. You may not even be aware that you are tossing and turning until you awaken in the morning and discover that you still as tired as you were when you went to bed.

With a feather mattress there is no conforming to your body, so as the mattress wears, so does its ability to make you feel comfortable or to “mold” around your body, but a good foam mattress will hug your body, allowing you to move around with comfort and feeling completely rested and pain free in the morning. If you suffer from back pain in the morning without any obvious cause, you may want to think about the condition of your current mattress. If it is more than five years old, it is probably time for you to think about buying a new one.

At the turn of the century, choosing a bed for your child was a simpler matter. (...)

At the turn of the century, choosing a bed for your child was a simpler matter. The newborn had a bassinette and went from there to a crib where he or she remained until it came time for a twin bed. There was nothing in between, so if your child began to climb out of the crib, it was time for a “big kid” bed to prevent him from getting hurt, especially since few homes then had carpeting in the bedroom.

Sometimes it might be simpler to return to those days of old instead of being faced with the dilemma of what kind of bed to buy for your baby. There are cribs that turn into youth beds, and youth beds that become twin beds when the time is right. It is now a test for parents to decide what kind of bed to get and to choose between Spiderman, Superman, Barbie, and of course, the Cars. What happened to just going to the store and buying a functional child’s bed? Unlike the adult bed, a child’s bed changes with the cartoon or movie of the day. Though more difficult to choose, children’s beds are much more adaptable to the size of the child than was previously the case.

For many parents, choosing the child’s first “big kid” bed is a sad experience because it is a sign that one’s child is no longer a baby but is growing up. That is especially true for the first time parent or for the youngest child. To ease the trauma, make it a special day for your child as you pick out a bed and the bedding to go along with it. If you choose a youth bed with one of the popular characters, you may want to help your child pick out his bedding in the same character style. By making the shopping trip a fun time for child and parents, the transition is less traumatic for both.

Many things have changed over the course of time, some good and some just barely mediocre. Over the years, there is one thing that you can always count on, and that is the beauty and durability of the iron bed.

Many people don’t think of the concept of owning an iron bed as 21st century technology, but looking around at the styles that are available shows that they have withstood the test of time. No longer are they limited to just a few styles that our grandparents remember at the turn of the 20th century and some years afterwards, but the designs are now are intricate and beautiful as that of a finely polished wooden bed – perhaps even more so.

Not only has the actual design of these beds been modernized, but the choices have been expanded as well. Modern styles have swayed from early 20th century styles into more diversified and modern lines that include canopy and day beds in addition to the comfortable and functional standard bed. If you loved Grandma’s simple but beautifully designed iron bed, you can now own one of your very own, adapted to the 21st century way of life.

Whether you are looking for a twin bed, full size bed, queen size, day bed, or the popular sleigh bed, you’ll be able to enjoy one in iron. Prices vary from style to style, and even amongst retailers, but one thing that remains a constant is the quality of durability of these longstanding beds. The styles themselves have changed to adapt to the change in styles from generation to generation, but the quality has never waned. If you’re looking for a bed that is functional, durable, and beautiful, then an iron bed will meet your needs and desires quite well no matter what style you seek. Never has any one product ever withstood the test of time so well, requiring nothing more than a design change to keep in tune with the present time offerings.
